Why patient holding companies outperform over decades

6 min read

A note from the Group on capital discipline, operator independence, and the compounding effect of long ownership.

The holding company model is often misread as a portfolio of unrelated bets. Done well, it is the opposite: a small number of businesses held long enough for compounding to do the heavy lifting.

Three conditions matter. First, capital discipline — the willingness to say no far more often than yes. Second, operator independence — the people running a business must be able to make decisions at the speed their market demands. Third, permanence of ownership, which changes what a management team is willing to attempt.

None of this is exotic. It is simply harder than it sounds, because each condition is tested most severely in the years when results are least visible.

CHUKWUDERA Holdings is built around those conditions, and we expect to be judged on how they hold up over the next decade rather than the next reporting period.
